Holy Week Help – Sunday…

April 17, 2011 by Phil Auxier

Throughout this week, I will be posting from 2 helpful links to give you good things to think about. One was a post at the Rabbit Room called, Easter Week in Real Time, and the other are the helpful tips for family worship at the Village Church’s Children’s Blog.

Russ Ramsey helps us view Sunday:

In John 10, Jesus said, “No one takes my life from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I alone have the authority to lay it down, and the authority to take it up again, and this charge I received from my Father.”

This is a statement worth testing. Does the Scriptural narrative tell the story of an inspirational man martyred because He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and simply couldn’t avoid capture? Or do the last days of His life tell the story of someone intentionally offering Himself up, on His own terms, by His own authority? As we approach Easter, have you ever taken the time to really examine what took place on each day of the week from Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday? Here’s a daily reading guide for each day of Easter Week.

Palm Sunday
(See Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, John 12:9-19.)

When Jesus rode into Jerusalem perched up on a colt on Palm Sunday, it was the first time since raising Lazarus from the dead that He’d shown His face in the city. The story of Lazarus’ resurrection had circulated so that even those who only heard about it later regarded Jesus as a celebrity. Everyone wanted to catch a glimpse of Jesus. They went out to meet Him and received Him like a King, because they heard He had done this. (Jn 12:18)

Jesus said Lazarus’ death would end in the faith of many, and in the “glory of God—that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” (Jn 11:4) But the glory He had in mind was even more glorious than His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. In fact, He wasn’t referring to the glory these people gave Him at all. Lazarus’ resurrection would steel the resolve of the religious leaders to hand Jesus over to a death He would freely accept—a death He would conquer. That was the glory He meant. As He rode into Jerusalem, the people cried, “Your King is coming!” They praised His victory over Lazarus’ death. But the irony was that He wasn’t coming to claim His crown on account of Lazarus’ death and resurrection, but on account of His own.

And the Village Church urges families to:

Read Matthew 21:1-11 as a family. Ask your kids these questions:
What did the people call Jesus?
Hosanna means “Save us.” What was Jesus going to save His people from?
Did the people like Jesus? How can you tell?
What does it look like for you and your family to worship Jesus?

Hope you have a great Palm Sunday.

Weekend Recap – Better Than Angels

April 10, 2011 by Phil Auxier

Today’s sermon, Better Than Angels from Hebrews 1:4-14 is now online. In this sermon, I took another chance to exalt Jesus as the supreme One, not just in the fact of what He’s inherited but how His person and work set Him apart. I hope it proved helpful in the lives of people.

Weekend Preview – Greater Than Angels / Small Groups

April 9, 2011 by Phil Auxier

We are anticipating a great weekend at Crestview, Lord willing.

In the AM, we will continue working through Hebrews, looking at Hebrews 1:4-14 and how Jesus is superior to angels. I’m sure, like me, you’ve received all those weird forwards like “you’re an angel, forward this to 13 people and something magical will happen to you.” Honestly, though, we don’t understand a lot about angels and forget that even they are subservient to Christ. These will be the themes we’ll be engaging with on Sunday.

In the PM, we will meet in small groups and continue our discussions through Jerry Bridges’ Respectable Sins. This week, we are discussing chapter 3.

I hope you’ll plan to join us and pray that Jesus will be exalted in all we say and do.

Oh, and don’t forget to review our church’s Scripture memory verses from the past 4 weeks, they will help orient you to worship. (Hebrews 1:1-4)

…The GirlTalkers recommend giving C.J.’s series on modesty a listen. It was recently re-aired on Family Life Today. Here are the three sessions:

In the interview, C.J. references a Modesty Checklist, which can be found as a PDF document called Modesty Heart Check, written by C.J.’s wife and daughters.

2 New Great Albums…

April 7, 2011 by Phil Auxier

In recent days, 2 outstanding worship projects have been released:

God Of Victory is the new worship project from The Village Church, where Matt Chandler pastors. This has been an amazing project for me to pick up. I’ve probably listened to it about 15 times in the past week and specifically, have enjoyed the song “Only The Blood.” The chords charts, chords with capo and story behind the songs, as well as other things are available on the album page.

Another outstanding album I’ve enjoyed has been:

Risen by Sovereign Grace Ministries. I love the opening track, which just makes my heart beat and specifically praise rise as I think about what God has accomplished for me in His resurrection. They have an album page as well as chords available on Bob Kauflin’s site, Worship Matters.

Check out these projects as you grow to sing a new song to the Lord.

My Favorite Quote from @DailyKeller’s King’s Cross…

April 5, 2011 by Phil Auxier

Just finished Keller’s recent book, King’s Cross: The Story of the World in the Life of Jesus, which was really an experience of worship in preparing for another Passion Week. I’m wondering if I ought to re-read this book every year around this time. Keller’s lets Mark’s Gospel communicate why Jesus came and who He was.

My favorite quote came on p.41, which was eye-opening in helping me see how easily people in the church can fall prey to the shackles of religion…

In religion the purpose of obeying the law is to assure you that you’re all right with God. As a result, when you come to the law, what you’re most concerned about is detail. You want to know exactly what you’ve got to do, because you have to push all the right buttons. You won’t gravitate toward seeking out the intent of the law; rather, you’ll tend to write into the law all sorts of details of observance so you can assure yourself that you’re obeying it. But in the life of Christians the law of God–though still binding on them–functions in a completely different way. It shows you the life of love you want to live before the God who has done so much for you. God’s law takes you out of yourself; it shows you how to serve God and others instead of being absorbed with yourself. You study and obey the law of God in order to discover the kind of life you should live in order to please and resemble the one who created and redeemed you, delivering you from the consequences of sin. And you don’t violate it or whittle it down to manageable portions by adding man-made details to it.

This is just one of many gems in this book. Enjoy.

From One Degree To Another?

Yeah, that's right. My one, consuming passion is Jesus Christ, my Lord. I'm totally gripped by one message: the Gospel - the good news that God came after me when I was far from Him. So, the life I live, I live by faith in Him: He loved me and gave Himself for me.

From One Degree To Another is the change that He's accomplishing in me by grace. Growing downward in humility, upward into Him, outward toward others, and inward with renewal characterize my existence.

This site is where I flesh all of these types of things out, including my life as a slave to Jesus, husband, father, coffee-enjoyer, and pastor. I hope it encourages you.
