Vacation – Summer 2010

June 21, 2010 by Phil Auxier

After yesterday’s AM service, we left for vacation. So…posts may be sporadic. We traveled yesterday to Springfield, MO and will be in Branson for a bit, then STL, then to my Mom’s for the weekend. Pray that God would give me a servant’s heart toward my family and give physical rest and refreshment of spirit.

On the Personal Side… (3)

May 31, 2010 by Phil Auxier

If you’ve been following my weekend, today is the day my wife returns from Florida. Although the night included Andrew waking up at 1:30AM claiming “something was in his room,” the night was pretty uneventful. Woke up to both boys ready to play at 6:55AM. During breakfast, I broke a tooth. Strange for me…I’ve never had teeth issues. But, for whatever reason, that bread seemed too big for my tooth to overcome. That was trial #1. It’s been crazy. I’m ready for Meg to be home and know that God wants to continue sanctifying me, exposing my heart’s weakness in this crazy day.

Got time this morning to do reading, (read Spurgeon on Colossians 3:1-2), listening (Chandler’s latest sermon as well as an excellent sermon from JR Vassar on what the church is to be and do), and cleaning (flooded the kitchen with laundry water). But, looking forward to heading to Wichita around 4 to get my babe.

On the Personal Side … (2)

May 30, 2010 by Phil Auxier

If you read my last post, it seemed as though I was going to cruise through the weekend without a hitch. After a great Friday night with friends, who really helped to give me a break, I was rolling Saturday AM. Got the boys loaded and picked up a package at the post office, but when I got back in the car, it wouldn’t start. After much work (and coming home using the truck to shuttle the boys around to run some other errands), found out the starter needed replaced and finished that up around 6:45PM. After supper, baths and prep for Sunday, boys went down.

Today was a pretty uneventful day, getting up and getting the boys around and then settling into a typical Sunday AM routine at church. Got through everything, grabbed some lunch with other friends, and came home and all boys (including me) got a nap in. Tonight, we get to be with some other friends for a Fish Fry. Just one more day till Mom gets home. I can’t wait!

Please continue to pray that God would be glorified in our home.

A few of you know that Meg is in Florida with her mom for the weekend, which leaves me home with the 2 boys (4 and 2 year old if your wondering). Had a productive day yesterday: a friend came over and helped me clean maple tree sproutlets out of the gutters, fix the attic fan and put together a swingset. In the evening, we went to watch our adult church softball team play (we won pretty handily). Then, we went and got some ice cream.

Today, ran a few errands and am home enjoying some down time while the boys sleep. Have some friends over tonight for a break (for kids from me and me to adult world conversations).

So…if you’re a reader of mine, please pray that I would exhibit godliness to my boys by being patient with them, having a few extra things to account for this weekend. I really enjoy having an opportunity like this (and being able to bless Meg in this way), but I realize also my sinful nature is crouching at the door waiting to be served and I want to master it so the boys are served well. Pray for me to be holy in this.

Rick Auxier – Bday 4/30

April 30, 2010 by Phil Auxier

Today is the day that was my father’s birthday; he would have been 59. For those who don’t know, my father passed away on 1/28/98. While in seminary, my good friend, Brad Russell, wrote a poem to remember my father’s passing on to glory. It is loaded with excellent theology and a fitting thing to remember today. It’s entitled “To The Glory of God.”

To the glory of God, his life was created,
In the providence of God, living a grace unfading,
In the love of God, husband, father, son and friend,
In the word of God, each step firmly waiting,
In the sovereignty of God, always hoping,
In the power of God, touching hearts with compassion,
In the holiness of God, always rejoicing,
In the mercy of God, each moment a vapor passing,
To the glory of God, with Him now reigning,
To the glory of God, we hope in the blood unchanging.

We now and forever worship; in Spirit and Truth
In praise of the providence
love
word
sovereignty
power
holiness
and mercy of God.
Praising God for you…
Living and living forever…
To the Glory of God!

My father was not a perfect man nor a perfect pastor (he pastored churches as long as I can remember, but before he married my mother traveled as a full time evangelist). But I can see him now in my mind’s eye, rejoicing in his Savior’s presence to God’s glory. Thanks Brad for this piece that directs me heavenward. And, I’m thankful to God for the heritage of a father who loved God’s Word, loved people and lived in a way that made the Gospel attractive.

Update…

December 29, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

I guess some of you see that there has been a break in the blogging for me. We left Christmas Day and drove through the historic midwestern snow storm last week. Pretty uneventful trip and ended up here at my Mom’s safely. I’ve had pretty relaxing days all in all. We went to her church on Sunday and have been shopping for some post Christmas bargains. Yesterday, worked on my Mom’s clothes dryer for a bit. Today, helping her take down Christmas decor. Oh, we also finished a 1000 piece puzzle. Watched some movies as well. That’s about it. I anticipate the week gaining speed as we return home later this week and get back in the swing of things here soon.

Slow Blogging Week Last Week…

December 13, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

Sorry for the lack of posts last week. I gave the updates on Chandler and then was off of the radar far a good bit last week. I took an extra day off to go the movies with my wife in Wichita. We saw Disney’s The Christmas Carol in 3D, which was lots of fun. Then, on Friday, I got my new computer in the mail. After tinkering with that most of the weekend, I think I have all of the software updated and files transferred. So, hopefully, it will be back to business tomorrow.

Thought I owed my readers some sort of explanation.

BLACK Friday…

November 27, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

So there I was this morning, wrapped around a Toys R Us at Midnight to get in for a few “deals”. We have a set budget for Christmas gifts and Meg has worked all the deals to find the best bang for our buck. I could help noticing, though, as I waited 1 hour and 40 minutes to check out (not to get in…to check out) if something was a bit awry in the thinking of the average American.

Seems like someone said something about this…Jesus in Luke 12:15…

Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.

Now, lest I call the kettle black, our society does have deals available and the holiday season is overly commercialized. If we would just guard our hearts with the same diligence we guard our bank accounts looking for good deals, we would not need this warning from Jesus on covetousness.

Black Friday is called Black Friday because traditionally it was the one day of the year that sent retailers into the black for the year (meaning they would earn a profit for the year). After my experience and reading these warnings from Jesus, I tend the think of Black Friday as a great reminder of the selfish and sinful nature of my heart without the grace of God. I want to boast in Him over any other deal.

Vacation…

November 25, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

As some of you may know, we left at 3AM on Tues, Nov 24, to come to my Mom’s. We ended up getting here around 2:30PM, and after Supper at my sister’s, we were all exhausted. Andrew went up to his cousins and said (without our prompting), “By-by, we are going to Bamma’s to go to sleep.”

So, we are having some vacation time. I knew it was vacation this morning when I got up this morning. My vacation:

A third cup of morning coffee…

What’s Been Read or Being Read…

November 16, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

It’s been a while since I’ve updated my reading list, so I thought it was a good time to do so:

I continue to use Carson’s For the Love of God, Vol 2, Water of the Word, and the ESV Study Bible during devotions. I’m also enjoying Nancy Guthrie’s Come Thou Long Expected Jesus, which is a series of collected writings from old and modern authors on Advent. I just picked up Bryan Chapell’s Christ Centered Worship, and try to get a chapter of it read during devotions as well.

I’ve been working through Chris Wright’s Knowing Jesus Through The Old Testament, which has really helped open my eyes to some OT expectations and realities about Jesus coming.

I finished A Praying Life and was really helped by it. The Heart of Anger really helped me recognize some sinful tendencies on my part as a parent. Feelings and Faith helped me not to fear affections so much. Gospel Powered Parenting was a nice read, but didn’t say too many things you can’t read elsewhere. The End of the Law was cumbersome (it was Biblical theology) but helpful in establishing some good foundation in interacting with Moses. Mohler’s latest, Words From The Fire, has nearly compelled me to do a series on the 10 Commandments in 2010.

As for what’s on the docket:
Finally got Our Boys in today. Will be an enjoyable read.

Just got in CrossTalk (WTS was selling it for $5 last week), subtitled Where Life and Scripture Meet by Mike Emlet. Published by the publishing arm of CCEF, I think it will be a helpful book in practical theology.

Also got in two books after listening to Dever’s latest interview with Iain Murray: A Bio of John Murray and collection of bios on Scottish believers.

I’m still working through the Mission of God and hope to read through the Pilgrim’s Progress again.

Good news, though. Winter is coming! More time to be inside reading :).

From One Degree To Another?

Yeah, that's right. My one, consuming passion is Jesus Christ, my Lord. I'm totally gripped by one message: the Gospel - the good news that God came after me when I was far from Him. So, the life I live, I live by faith in Him: He loved me and gave Himself for me.

From One Degree To Another is the change that He's accomplishing in me by grace. Growing downward in humility, upward into Him, outward toward others, and inward with renewal characterize my existence.

This site is where I flesh all of these types of things out, including my life as a slave to Jesus, husband, father, coffee-enjoyer, and pastor. I hope it encourages you.
