Assessing Reality…

May 21, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

In my sermon intro this Sunday, I will be quoting a blog post by Paul Tripp (which ended up in his book Whiter Than Snow). Here’s how it begins…

Sin lives in a costume, that’s why it’s so hard to recognize. The fact that sin looks so good is one of the things that make it so bad. In order for it to do its evil work, it must present itself as something that is anything but evil. Life in a fallen world is like attending the ultimate masquerade party. Impatient yelling wears the costume of a zeal for truth. Prevented lust masquerades as a love for beauty. Gossip does its evil work by living in the costume of concern and prayer. Craving for power and control wears the mask of biblical leadership. Fear of man gets dressed up as a servant heart. The pride of always being right masquerades as a love for biblical wisdom. Evil simply doesn’t present itself as evil, that is part of its draw.

You’ll never understand sin’s slight of hand until you acknowledge that the DNA of sin is deception. Now what this means personally is that as sinners we are all very committed and gifted self-swindlers. I say all the time to people that no one is more influential in their own lives than they are because no one talks to themselves more than they do. We’re all too skilled at looking at our own wrong and seeing good. We’re all much better at seeing the sin, weakness, and failure of others than we are our own. We’re all very good at being intolerant of others of the very things that we willingly tolerate in ourselves. The bottom line is that sin causes us to not hear or see ourselves with accuracy. And we not only tend to be blind, but to compound matters, we tend to be blind to our blindness. (also found on p.32 of the book)

As we look at Peter’s Denial this Sunday, it would be easy for us to take a posture of exaltation as we look at the sin found in that story, but I hope this weekend that God can expose us for who we are and we can make headway in aggressively putting sin to death and putting on holiness. Hope to see you there.

Weekend Preview – Judgment & Following

April 30, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

This weekend, Lord willing, I will be back in the pulpit and looking forward to a full Lord’s Day.

In the morning service, we will be exploring Mark 14:43-52. For a while, we’ve been looking at the theme of spiritual weakness and how the disciples got on a path of that when they argued that they would stay devoted with Jesus to death and, then, how in the Garden, Jesus urged them to watch and pray and, thus, escape temptation, for the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. In this passage, we see these followers wrestling with courageous following. The problem: they pursue it with misguided actions, forget that Jesus sees the ultimate purpose of all events and ultimately fail to be devoted to Jesus.

In the evening service, we will be looking at Hosea 5:1-15. I alluded to this in my last post. Hosea 5 really unfolds how God is righteous in His judgment. He will punish His people because they fail to look to Him. If they will only repent of their adultery and turn to Him, God would give them grace, but until they do, God will be content to keep them under His righteous judgment.

Hope to see you this weekend and I’m praying that God works in amazing ways through His Word.

Sun AM Preview – Sleep…

April 16, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

On Sunday AM, this weekend, (and Lord-willing), we will be looking at Mark 14:32-42. This section really gets at spiritual weakness again. Jesus demonstrating such spiritual strength in His humble submission to the Father’s will and the disciples’ failure to “watch and pray that they don’t enter into temptation.” David Garland, in his excellent commentary on Mark, writes how “spiritual drowsiness is dangerous and will prove the Christian’s undoing.” He then outlines 4 descriptions of what it means to sleep, largely informed from this passage:
– to sleep is to stop praying
– to sleep is to be unable to recognize the onset of trial or accept it as God’s will
– to sleep is to presume that the Spirit is willing without being mindful of the weakness of the flesh
– to sleep is to assume that we have arrived
(pp.555-556)

Spiritual drowsiness is spiritual weakness. Join us this Sunday as we seek to get remedies for this dreadful condition.

Sun PM – God’s Charge…

April 16, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

This coming Sunday night, we encounter some strong language from God for the people of Israel from the prophet Hosea. In Hosea 4:1-19, God has a contention with the people for their lack of devotion to Him. I hope to see you there as we look at God’s Word and wonder what affect our compromise and lack of passion are having upon our fellowship with God.

Weekend Preview – Easter

April 11, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

It occurred to me this morning that I hadn’t posted since Monday. I had a pretty busy week pulling together our Good Friday Service (which went quite well and allowed us to focus on the death of our Lord) and our Easter Service.

Our Early Time starts at 8AM tomorrow, we will sing the Easter Song and In Christ Alone, and hear God’s Word announce the incredible news that “He Is Risen“.

After a breakfast/brunch and Sunday School, we will return for more corporate worship. Our text is 2 Timothy 2:8-9. There will be much boasting in the Gospel and, specifically, giving glory to God’s Son for all that He accomplished in it. Set your heart on Him this weekend and we will see Him glorified.

Sunday, 4/5 Preview

April 2, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

Just finished up sermon manuscripts for the weekend, looks like we are going to be seeing some amazing things.

In the AM, after singing songs related to Palm Sunday, we will look at the theme of “Spiritual Weakness” from Mark 14:26-31.

In the PM, continuing our series on Hosea, we will explore Hosea 3:1-5 and how love works to overcome our sin. We are doing a song called “Broken Cisterns” in this service. Take a look at the lyrics before the weekend.

Anticipation for this Sunday, 4/22…

March 19, 2009 by Mere Agency Support

I am looking forward to gathering with fellow believers this Sunday…

The AM sermon is on the Lord’s Supper from Mark 14:22-25. We will also observe the Lord’s Supper at the culmination of the service.

The PM small group lesson gets to some great practical matters in fighting sin.

Looks like we should have a great Lord’s Day.

From One Degree To Another?

Yeah, that's right. My one, consuming passion is Jesus Christ, my Lord. I'm totally gripped by one message: the Gospel - the good news that God came after me when I was far from Him. So, the life I live, I live by faith in Him: He loved me and gave Himself for me.

From One Degree To Another is the change that He's accomplishing in me by grace. Growing downward in humility, upward into Him, outward toward others, and inward with renewal characterize my existence.

This site is where I flesh all of these types of things out, including my life as a slave to Jesus, husband, father, coffee-enjoyer, and pastor. I hope it encourages you.
