The Gospel in a Nutshell (by Tim Keller)

February 11, 2014 by Phil Auxier

I love how Tim Keller outlines the passage I’m preaching on this coming Sunday (Romans 1:16-17):

Romans 1:16-17 – Paul’s Thesis: the gospel in a nutshell
Characteristics of the Gospelv.16a – The gospel destroys shame (its effect)
v.16b – The gospel is a living force (its power)
v.16c – The gospel can save anyone at all (its scope)
v.16d – The gospel saves only those believing (its condition)
v.16d – The gospel came to the Jew first, then the Gentile (its history)
Content of the Gospelv.17a – God provides a perfect righteousness and record for us
v.17b – It is received by faith permanently and exclusively
v.17c – The result of reception is a new way of life

Why don’t you consider the amazing message of grace found in the Bible and believe?

Weekend Recap – Gospel Eagerness

February 9, 2014 by Phil Auxier

My 2/9/14AM sermon, Gospel Eagerness from Romans 1:8-15, is now online.  The sermon sought to highlight how Paul encourages his readers in Gospel eagerness (or being eager to hear and speak all things Gospel).  He encourages them by highlighting the mutually edifying nature of faith, showcasing how the Gospel is for all people, and by being eager to preach and hear the Gospel.  I hope this sermon encourages your Gospel eagerness.

Have a blessed Sunday.

Weekend Recap – The Everyone Gospel

February 2, 2014 by Phil Auxier

My 2/2/14AM sermon, The Everyone Gospel from Romans 1:1-7, is now online.  The sermon was an attempt to capture the brilliant way the book of Romans is introduced by the Holy Spirit through the apostle Paul.  And, the big theme is the Gospel.  This intro shows the progression of the Gospel: it’s promised, revealed in Jesus and changes all kinds of people.  I hope you find it helpful and encouraging.

Have a blessed Lord’s Day.

Weekend Recap – Romans Overview

January 26, 2014 by Phil Auxier

My 1/26/14AM sermon, Overview of Romans, which was the second in 2 introductory sermons to this book, is now online.  In it, I try to show how active grace is in moving in to change us, affect how we live, overflowing to all and shaping the church.  I’m excited to dig into the specifics of verses now that these introductions are complete.

What themes stand out to you as you read the book of Romans?

Weekend Recap – Why Romans?

January 19, 2014 by Phil Auxier

My 1/19/14AM sermon, Why Romans?, is now online.  My summary of the book is: the glory of God in a united church on mission under grace.  Today, I unpacked how the Gospel is found in Romans and that it’s found to encourage partnership in mission as well as peace among the church’s people.  I hope it was helpful for our body as we started this study.

I hope you had a restful, enjoyable Lord’s Day, as well.

Small Group Prep – Saving Grace

December 3, 2013 by Phil Auxier

Had some time this AM to think about our upcoming small group session which, for my group, will include looking at what has been called “the most important paragraph in the Bible”: Romans 3:21-26.

With Advent on the mind, I read these words:

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Also, encouraging, though, were the notes from the Gospel Transformation Bible:

If previous verses might lead to despair, Paul now sets forth grounds for rejoicing. What Abraham set his hope on by faith, so that God granted him a righteous standing (Gen. 15:6), Jesus Christ has accomplished “for all who believe” the gospel promise as Abraham did (Rom. 3:22). Yes, the sinful human condition is universal and terminal (v. 23). But believers “are justified” by God’s “grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (v. 24). The term “redemption” suggests a picture of slaves being purchased and freed. God sent his Son to be a “propitiation”: he satisfied the demands of God’s wrath by his death on the cross in the place of sinners. When he “passed over former sins” (v.25) prior to Jesus’ coming, God did not merely dismiss the charges against the guilty. Rather, God’s righteous demands were met in Jesus’ death. God proved to be “just” in not overlooking sin, and he also freely chose to act as “justifier” for “the one who has faith in Jesus” (v.26).
Our hearts are moved as we marvel at the wisdom of God in providing a righteous way of rescue for guilty sinners that does not in any way compromise his justice and holiness. We marvel, too, at God’s great love in sending his own Son to accomplish this salvation.

So, as we prep (at least my group prepares) for Sunday’s Small Group, let’s marvel at God sending His Son to accomplish these things for us.  Ask God for a heart that treasures and boasts in this one great focus.

In Romans with Elyse Fitzpatrick

January 17, 2013 by Phil Auxier

I don’t know about you, but I don’t find a more practical writer when it comes to the Gospel and my life than Elyse Fitzpatrick.  So, I would highly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity from Crossway about Elyse’s forthcoming book:

If you never got off the ground with a 2013 Bible reading plan or are so far behind you’ve already thrown in the towel, on every Monday in March at the Crossway blog they will be reading Romans 1-8 together. Elyse Fitzpatrick will share devotional thoughts from Romans, helping us delight in God’s word and rejoice in the gospel in 2013.

So join Crossway in March as Elyse encourages us again from Romans 1-8. We’re invited to bring questions, insights, and interact in the comments section. For more devotional material to accompany Reboot with Romans, check out Elyse’s newest book—Comforts from Romans: Celebrating the Gospel One Day at a Time.

Wireless Microphone Compliance…

June 15, 2010 by Phil Auxier

It was recently brought to my attention that wireless mics are prohibited from operating in the 700 Mhz band. This caused us to have to look at our wireless mics and we had one that needed adjusted to comply. This ruling came from the FCC, who say:

Certain wireless microphones have operated in frequencies that are needed for public safety. When these microphones were first designed, the frequencies they used were in between the frequencies that television stations used to broadcast television programs. With the completion of the digital television (DTV) transition on June 12, 2009, television stations no longer use the frequencies between 698 and 806 MHz (the 700 MHz Band) for broadcast. These frequencies are now being used by public safety entities (such as police, fire and emergency services) and by commercial providers of wireless services (such as wireless broadband services).

The wireless microphones that had been operating in the old TV broadcast channels can cause harmful interference to these public safety and wireless consumer services. Therefore, all users of wireless microphones (or certain low power auxiliary stations) that operate on any of the frequencies in the 700 MHz band – including both licensed users (under Part 74) and unlicensed users – now have to stop operating in this band.

Another blog I read, Security at Church, quoted an article about churches scrambling to comply. As we were upgrading, I was surprised to hear of churches in our area who refuse to upgrade, citing “this is just how government works with more regulations” and “we will never get checked.” However, Scripture calls us in Romans 13:1-7 to the following:

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Remember, Paul is writing this to Christians in Rome who were, no doubt, facing a much more wicked government than we are. He is urging them to obey and to do so with a certain heart, because God is their authority.

For this reason, then: because we are under the authority of God who has placed the government over us and because the government is not calling us to abandon proclamation of the Gospel or be decidedly pro-choice or interpret Scripture a certain way (which in my view would be examples for pursuing civil disobedience), we will not only comply, but seek to do so joyfully.

From One Degree To Another?

Yeah, that's right. My one, consuming passion is Jesus Christ, my Lord. I'm totally gripped by one message: the Gospel - the good news that God came after me when I was far from Him. So, the life I live, I live by faith in Him: He loved me and gave Himself for me.

From One Degree To Another is the change that He's accomplishing in me by grace. Growing downward in humility, upward into Him, outward toward others, and inward with renewal characterize my existence.

This site is where I flesh all of these types of things out, including my life as a slave to Jesus, husband, father, coffee-enjoyer, and pastor. I hope it encourages you.
