Weekend Recap – Community and the King

November 7, 2010 by Phil Auxier

Today was a great Lord’s Day. In the AM, we wrapped up the book of Colossians by looking at Colossians 4:7-18 and a sermon entitled Gospel Community, showing how God intends for the church to relate to one another.

In the PM, we looked at how the OT promises to David as God’s forever king in 2 Samuel 7:8-16 point to Jesus in a sermon entitled God’s King.

Both of these sermons get at glorifying God by submitting to all that God is for us in Christ. In the AM, we flesh out the Gospel in community. In the PM, we need to remember that Jesus is God’s forever King and live in that reality. Much grace was shown by God in unfolding these words to us.

Weekend Recap – Lordship for Parents/Unbelief

October 4, 2010 by Phil Auxier

Yesterday’s sermons are now online:

AM: Lordship for Parents from Colossians 3:21
PM: Jesus in the OT – Unbelief from Numbers 13-14 and Hebrews 3-4

I thought the AM message, in particular, was very convicting personally. The call to not lead our children to discouragement is a hard line to keep. I also looked at Ephesians 6:4 and how it brings a positive admonition to the discussion of parenting in leading our children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. I urged parents to lead children to this through teaching and example. So, there was much to live from there.

In the PM, we continued looking at the OT story and how it points to Jesus. Specifically, the sermon dealt with the unbelief of Israel in the wilderness. I tried to show how the author of Hebrews points us to persevere in belief and not repeat the mistakes they made. The application for me from that message was to persevere in the message of first importance: the Gospel.

I hope you had a great Lord’s Day as well.

Is the Bible About You or Jesus?

August 23, 2010 by Phil Auxier

This great video uses Tim Keller’s 2007 address from the Gospel Coalition to point to the overarching sweep of biblical theology. This video summarizes the basic message we were driving at last night in small groups, as well.

Weekend Recap – Reconciliation

August 15, 2010 by Phil Auxier

Another Lord’s Day has come and gone. Seemed like the theme of reconciliation or peace with God was in the atmosphere here today.

In the AM, we looked at Colossians 3:15 (sermon: Rule of Peace) and the call to let peace rule in our lives. We can put this on with confidence because of all that Jesus has done to make us right with God.

In the PM, we looked at Exodus 25:8-22 and how Jesus is seen in the tabernacle (sermon: Tabernacle). This sermon showed how God came near to us in Christ and even removed the separation spoken of in the tabernacle through Jesus’ work on the cross.

It was a great Lord’s Day. What stood out to anyone out there?

Weekend Recap – Jesus, Sin and the Law

July 18, 2010 by Phil Auxier

Well, another Sunday has come and gone, by God’s grace.

In the AM, we looked at Colossians 3:8-10 in a sermon entitled Put Away Sin. We saw three truths, specifically, in seeking to deal with sin:
1) We must deal with it urgently
2) Sin makes us look life how we were before Christ
3) Our new self is being renewed by God and conformed to Christ
As we seek to practice this, there is much reason to hope, because of passages like Titus 2:11-14 and the work that God is accomplishing in His children to renew them.

In the PM, springing out of Exodus 20:1-20, we saw how the 10 Commandments really point to Jesus (the sermon’s title was Jesus and the Ten Commandments). Jesus perfectly embodied what God wanted to accomplish in the Law, establishing a people that live for Him. We can’t keep the Law, but in the new covenant, we are changed to be enabled to obey. To put it simply, the 10 Commandments drive us to find our hope in Jesus and the Gospel.

I hope you had a great Lord’s Day. Let’s live out the truth of what we’ve seen.

Weekend Recap – Substance & Sacrifice

May 18, 2010 by Phil Auxier

The sermons from this past Lord’s Day are up and online…

In the AM, we looked at Colossians 2:16-17 and how Christ is more substantial for our justification than health or religion. The sermon was called Substance. The big question I gave at the end of the sermon was: “Why be content with the shadows when you have substance available?”

In the PM, we gathered to look at Sacrifice, Jesus in the OT story of the institution of Passover in Exodus 12:1-13. What stuck out to me was how Jesus was the perfect protection and provision for sinners.

Weekend Preview – Substance & Sacrifice

May 14, 2010 by Phil Auxier

This Lord’s Day, Lord-willing, we will be looking into Colossians again (specifically Colossians 2:16-17) and how Jesus is the substance over against all kinds of expressions of justification. Plan to come Sunday AM ready to boast in the Gospel.

On Sunday PM, we continue our walk through the OT, looking for sightings of Jesus and are in Exodus 12, and how the Passover implementation points to Christ. If possible, read through this chapter and prepare your heart to worship Jesus.

Weekend Wrap Up: Jesus, Our Everything

May 3, 2010 by Phil Auxier

Enjoyed a great Lord’s Day boasting in Jesus…

In the morning, new classes started in our Adult Sunday School. My morning message from Colossians 2:11-12 pointed to how we are likened to Jesus in His death, burial, and resurrection. The sermon, Gospel Likeness, is now online.

The PM service went well, too. We looked at how the OT story of the Exodus (God’s deliverance of His people out of Israelite bondage) pointed to Jesus. That sermon, Jesus, Our Deliverer, is also online. One highlight from the evening was singing “All I Have Is Christ” with the people of Crestview. It was a great cap on the day. Here’s a video in which you can hear it for free:

Thanks to Justin Taylor for giving links to the music as chord chart or 4 part harmony.

Weekend Preview – SS, Circumcision, Rescue & Simplicity

April 30, 2010 by Phil Auxier

This Sunday, May 2, we have a lot happening.

First off, we have new adult SS classes starting. Conor Eastman will be teaching Piper’s video curriculum Let The Nations Be Glad and Ron Rhoades will be walking through the Parables of Jesus.

During the AM service, I will be preaching a sermon entitled Gospel Likeness from Colossians 2:11-12. A recent journal article (for those scholarly among my readership) was on this passage. It’s entitled “Does Baptism Replace Circumcision? An Examination of the Relationship Between Circumcision and Baptism in Colossians 2:11-12.” The thrust of this message will be how we display a Gospel Likeness to Jesus in His death, burial and resurrection.

In the PM service, we continue to walk through the Old Testament looking for sightings of the Savior. And we will be looking at how God rescuing His people out of Egypt in Exodus 3 pointed to a Savior who would come and rescue us from sin.

Finally, my Men’s Theology class will discuss “What’s God Like?” Part of the homework included reading Kevin DeYoung’s post The Simplicity of God and answering the question, “How does this affect the way you think about God?”

It looks to be a full day, then. Prepare your heart in prayer, asking God to be our strong tower that the righteous run to and are safe (Proverbs 18:10).

Weekend Recap – Promises, Truth & The Gospel

April 19, 2010 by Phil Auxier

After the flurry of activity last week, it was great to get back to the dear people of God at Crestview. Had a full day, with SS, AM Service, Cross-Cultural Missions Committee, PM Service and Men’s Theology, but a fruitful one nonetheless.

In the AM, I preached from Colossians 2:8 a sermon entitled Error. In this talk, I was really trying to give clear exposition about the nature of error and how centering in Christ and the Gospel trumps everything else. It was yet another clear reminder of how central Christ and the Gospel should be.

In the PM, my sermon dealt with how promises made to Abraham pointed to Jesus. We looked at Genesis 12:1-3 and Genesis 17:1-8 (as well as NT texts highlighting the connection). The sermon was entitled Promise. I thought the promise of a city that was to come was one full of applications for believers (read Hebrews 11:9-16). At any rate, it was a great day.

From One Degree To Another?

Yeah, that's right. My one, consuming passion is Jesus Christ, my Lord. I'm totally gripped by one message: the Gospel - the good news that God came after me when I was far from Him. So, the life I live, I live by faith in Him: He loved me and gave Himself for me.

From One Degree To Another is the change that He's accomplishing in me by grace. Growing downward in humility, upward into Him, outward toward others, and inward with renewal characterize my existence.

This site is where I flesh all of these types of things out, including my life as a slave to Jesus, husband, father, coffee-enjoyer, and pastor. I hope it encourages you.
