Must Listens: Tullian & Chandler

December 1, 2010 by Phil Auxier

2 more amazing audio resources came available in recent days and, in God’s grace, they are available for free…

This past Lord’s Day, Tullian Tchividjian preached at Covenant Life Church on Jesus + Nothing = Everything from Colossians 1:9-14. There are amazing quotes and lines and truths from this that you simply must listen to. He discusses the 2 manners in which legalism tries to sink its tentacles into our lives, which was very enlightening. But take time and listen.

Also, 9Marks just released their leadership interview for the month. It is entitled Engaging Your Generation and features Matt Chandler. They summarize this interview as: “Matt Chandler discusses his past year, his approach to preaching, and what it takes to engage this generation with the gospel.”

Grab both of these and be edified and built up.

DeYoung on The Church

July 15, 2010 by Phil Auxier

I would highly recommend your listening to Kevin DeYoung’s sermon from Next entitled “The Church.” Here’s a summary from C.J. that came across my feed reader recently:

To close out his Next 2010 conference message, “The Church,” Kevin DeYoung gave a list of suggestions for how to be a difference maker in the local church. He said:

• Find a good local church.
• Get involved.
• Become a member.
• Stay there as long as you can.
• Put away thoughts of a revolution for a while.
• Join the plodding visionaries.
• Go to church this Sunday and worship in Spirit and truth.
• Be patient with your leaders.
• Rejoice when the gospel is faithfully proclaimed.
• Bear with those who hurt you.
• Give people the benefit of the doubt.
• Say “hi” to the teenager that no one notices.
• Welcome the old ladies with the blue hair and the young men with tattoos.
• Volunteer for the nursery.
• Attend the congregational meeting.
• Bring your fried chicken to the potluck like everybody else.
• Invite a friend.
• Take a new couple out for coffee.
• Give to the Christmas offering.
• Sing like you mean it.
• Be thankful someone vacuumed the carpet for you.
• Enjoy the Sundays that “click.”
• Pray extra hard on the Sundays that don’t.
• And in all of this, do not despise the days and weeks and years of small things (Zechariah 4:8–10).

I cannot recommend this message too highly. Please take time to download and listen to “The Church” by visiting the resource page at thisisnext.org.

I would whole-heartedly agree. Many times when people listen to or give a message on the church, it can seem like a rah-rah message at how people need to do what their pastors say. But this message is very even-handed showing that even weak leaders need followers who are interested in bigger things than their own shallow, capricious ideals. This is the stunning reality we see in Scripture about Jesus’ bride, the church. Listen, be profitable and glorify God.

Next Conference Online

June 2, 2010 by Phil Auxier

I’ve had the privilege of attending the Next Conference (formerly called New Attitude) put on by Sovereign Grace Ministries three times in my life. This conference is usually held over Memorial Day weekend. Each time I’ve attended was a time God worked in my life in amazing ways through His Word. Each year, they put the audio of the conference online for free. Here’s this year’s:

Joshua Harris, What Are You Built On?
Mark Dever, The Doctrine of Christ’s Work Accomplished and Applied
Kevin DeYoung, Scripture
C.J. Mahaney, Sanctification
D.A. Carson, God
Kevin DeYoung, The Church
Jeff Purswell, The End Times

Related to the conference, they do amazing music. Bob Kauflin has put the Next 2010 Set List online for us to know exactly what music they did. This includes a lot of free chord charts and lead sheets for worship people.

Free Kid’s CD – Jesus Came To Save Sinners

May 11, 2010 by Phil Auxier

Following Matt Chandler’s Twitter Feed, I came across this new worship project for children released Sunday. The Village Church (the church Chandler pastors) has done a project for kids entitled Jesus Came To Save Sinners. Best of all, this project is available as a free download on their site (or you can ITunes or Amazon it for a cost). Here’s their description of this project:

“Jesus Came to Save Sinners” contains five original songs that teach children about the character and nature of God and His plan to save sinners through Jesus Christ. These songs correspond with the five foundational truths – Jesus Came to Save Sinners, God is Good, God is in Charge of Everything, God Wants to Talk with Us, God Made Everything – taught each weekend in our preschool ministry, The Little Village. The mission and vision of The Little Village is “to partner with parents to build a firm spiritual foundation for their children.” Our hope is that these songs will be an effective tool in engaging your children with the truth of who God is as you endeavor to obey the biblical call to bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4)

I would encourage you to take advantage of this amazing resource.

Free Audio – Chandler and Gamache

March 3, 2010 by Phil Auxier

I’ve really had my soul fed by a couple of sermons you can grab for free off the web…

Matt Chandler has been working his way through Colossians. This sermon, Covenant with the Eternal Son, based on Colossians 1:15-18 was helpful, especially in his talking about why we study theology at one point. I would encourage you to take a listen.

Rick Gamache up at Sovereign Grace Fellowship in Minneapolis is preaching through 1 Peter. His sermon this past week, War and Witness, from 1 Peter 2:11-17 really gave good insight for indwelling sin and our war against it. He also wrestled with Scripture calling us to honor the emporer and what that means for us today. Really excellent message.

Enjoy.

Piper on God’s Word…

January 13, 2010 by Mere Agency Support

Each year, Piper begins the year with a sermon on prayer followed up by a sermon encouraging Bethlehem to be passionate for God’s Word. I had a chance to listen to last Sunday’s sermon, Holding Fast The Word of Life in 2010, and was encouraged and challenged to be passionate for God’s Word.

One part was when Piper was showing how the world influences believers so that they think God’s Word is boring. Piper’s response “Avatar is boring.” His point was that when the Almighty God of the universe speaks, it is never a boring thing. Great point and really used by God to awaken me to the sinful reality of my own heart. Listen, watch, or read and be encouraged.

Piper on Prayer

January 4, 2010 by Mere Agency Support

As we continue with our Week of Prayer, I thought I would commend John Piper’s Sunday message, which was also on prayer and is now online.

Entitled Praying in the Closet and in the Spirit, this sermon explores the tension between prayer being free and disciplined. You can read, watch, or listen to or download it.

From One Degree To Another?

Yeah, that's right. My one, consuming passion is Jesus Christ, my Lord. I'm totally gripped by one message: the Gospel - the good news that God came after me when I was far from Him. So, the life I live, I live by faith in Him: He loved me and gave Himself for me.

From One Degree To Another is the change that He's accomplishing in me by grace. Growing downward in humility, upward into Him, outward toward others, and inward with renewal characterize my existence.

This site is where I flesh all of these types of things out, including my life as a slave to Jesus, husband, father, coffee-enjoyer, and pastor. I hope it encourages you.
