On 10/9 at Crestview, I was privileged to be freed from pulpit responsibilities and hear Kole Farney preach on Psalm 63. The sermon, entitled Behold God in the Wilderness, walked through David’s time in the wilderness and drew out applications for us. I’d encourage you to grab the audio and receive the benefits of God’s Word.
Gospel Friday – Nailed To The Cross
I love the picture of redemption we get in Colossians 2…
In Jesus, God has forgiven our trespasses “by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” (Colossians 2:14)
Will you rejoice in this amazing good news today? You are free.
Weekend Preview – Church Picnic This Sunday
New Song – Jesus Is Lord
Our new song at Crestview for the month of October is Jesus is Lord by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty (listen here). We hope this song helps you praise Jesus for who He is.
Simeon Trust Workshop This Week
This week, I’m participating in the Simeon Trust Workshops on Biblical Exposition. I love the aim of this conference: The purpose of the workshop is to increase the participant’s confidence and ability in rightly handling God’s Word. We also want each person to leave convinced that God’s Word is powerful and eager to teach it to their people.
Would you pray this would be productive for me as I seek to be a better preacher.
Weekend Recap – Closing Communications
My 10/2/16AM sermon, Closing Communications, out of John 15:12-27 is now online. The sermon got at the fear that freezes so many of us in life. We’re stuck because some life circumstance freezes us. Jesus speaks, though. And, His speech drives us to love, understand the world’s hate, and bear witness to Jesus. I hope it encourages you.
Gospel Friday – Love
You may wake up today overwhelmed, wondering God’s thoughts of you, or even not caring about Him at all.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2:4-5)
Drink deep from this as we jump into our weekend (and October).
Weekend Preview – Love & Hate
This weekend at Crestview, we’ll continue making our way through John’s Gospel, specifically landing in John 15:12-27. It’s an amazing passage, really. After all that happens in the Upper Room, you’d wonder what else Jesus has to say or do. And, in this passage, He draws our attention to love and hate. Jesus’s followers are to be marked by love. And, Jesus’s followers will be hated by the world. But, Help has been sent by Jesus.
So, I hope you come prepared to worship, marveling at the love the Father has for us in sending us His Son who sends the Holy Spirit. See you Sunday.
Heaven Desired
We’ve had a heavy year as a church with various members and regular attenders battling illness and losing loved ones. One effect of this is to have a hunger or anticipation of heaven. I love the prayer from the Valley of Vision entitled Heaven Desired. Let these words be your heart and prayer as you comfort those facing these afflictions and seek to speak to your own heart about these matters.
O My Lord,
May I arrive where means of grace cease and I need no more to fast, pray, weep, watch, be tempted, attend preaching and sacrament;
where nothing defiles,
where is no grief, sorrow, sin, death, separation, tears, pale face, languid body, aching joints, feeble infancy, decrepit age, peccant humors, pining sickness, griping fears, consuming cares;
where the more perfect the sight the more beautiful the object,
the more perfect the appetite the sweeter the food,
the more musical the ear the more pleasant the melody,
the more complete the soul the more happy its joys,
where is full knowledge of thee.
Here I am an ant, and as I view a nest of ants so dost thou view me and my fellow-creatures
But as an ant knows not me, my nature, my thoughts, so here I cannot know thee clearly.
But there I shall be near thee,
dwell with my family,
stand in thy presence chamber,
be an heir of thy kingdom,
as the spouse of Christ,
as a member of his body,
one with him who is with thee,
and exercise all my powers of body and soul in the enjoyment of thee.
As praise in the mouth of thy saints is comely,
so teach me to exercise this divine gift,
when I pray, read, hear, see, do,
in the presence of people and of my enemies,
as I hope to praise thee eternally hereafter.
