Hutch Is Burning!

March 8, 2017 by Phil Auxier

I’m writing to collect some thoughts about our recent happenings in Hutchinson.  As many local readers know, we been dealing with wildfires since the weekend.  Unseasonably warm temps + low humidity + high winds = ripe conditions for this type of thing.  But, locals have really never seen anything like what’s happened these past few days.  6800 acres gone.  Remarkably, only 8 homes.  No fatalities.  We’ve experienced kindness from God through all of this.  Here’s a photo that shows an aerial view of the fire (this was from Tuesday):

I would echo Jason Probst sentiments in Facing Adversity, Hutchinson Shines.  It’s been amazing to see people not look out for their own interests, but also for the interests of others.  My struggle as a pastor who cares for people in my care has been getting figured out who needs help and how I can help.  By my count, we had 18 families who lived in the “evacuation zone”.  Yes, these are real life families, many with kids, or widows for whom I needed to have an idea of what was happening so that I could pray and mobilize people to act.  Not all of these were facing the active fire, but they were in a zone that meant for some anxiety and stress.  And, as pastor to these people, I carried their burden with me.

On Tuesday, we sent out an early message on how people could serve emergency personnel.  We, like many churches, have those with mercy gifts who were ready to step in and help in this situation.  This initial outlet gave them expression for their merciful hearts.  Then, we did a Noon Meal (with Papa John’s support) and followed that with a kid’s movie and popcorn.  The heart behind this move was wanting to give a place of retreat for those who were displaced or overwhelmed.  It helped families to have a place to go and not have to be going on to other places or things, as well as being able to connect with other adults while their kids were cared for.  I think it encouraged a good many people.  Tuesday night opened up some subdivisions and refined the evacuation.

Now, tonight (Wednesday) we’re continuing our Wed PM activities for children (6:30PM) but offering a meal at 5:30PM.  This will be another way to bring people together to encourage them.  This has been an amazing week here in Hutchinson.  Thank you for many who have prayed for us.  In the coming days further ways our community needs to come together will emerge.  And, please continue to pray because our first responders (who have been amazing through all of this) who are still fighting the fire in Hutch.

Weekend Recap – Worship Expressed

March 6, 2017 by Phil Auxier

My 3/5/17AM sermon, Worship Expressed from various texts, is now online.  This sermon wrapped up a short series on Worship I gave at Crestview Bible Church.  In particular, this sermon helped flesh out what “bending our lives to the reality that the Lord, He is God; we’re not” would look like.  Some truths that I engaged were: our focus in worship, how worship should be free, how worship relates to family, and how it will be forever.

I hope this sermon helps you grow as a worshipper of Jesus.

Weekend Recap – Worship Defined

February 20, 2017 by Phil Auxier

My 2/19/17AM sermon, Worship Defined, from various NT texts is now online.  In this sermon, I sought to drive to a Biblical definition of worship, after all definitions matter.  The definition that emerged as we looked at the Biblical evidence was: “worship is a bending our lives to the reality that the Lord, He is God; we’re not.”  I hope this sermon encourages you and provokes you to live a certain way.

Weekend Preview – Short Series on Worship

February 15, 2017 by Phil Auxier

This coming Sunday, I’m starting a short series on the subject of Worship.  Lord willing, we’ll journey through the Bible to try and arrive at what a good definition would be of this oft-discussed subject.

Hope to see you at Crestview, Sunday, 10:15AM (we also livestream and use FacebookLive to stream).

A Finish Line, Starting Point, and Race

February 14, 2017 by Phil Auxier

Ok…been a slow blogging season.  Here’s a summary.  I was dragging, had a health scare, and ended up getting a week of spontaneous vacation in Florida.  Got back and preached.  But, last week was especially loco.  I wrapped up Youth Leadership Reno County, a program I help facilitate, which helps equip 7-8 graders learn something about leadership.   On Thursday and Friday, as YLRC was ending, Leadership Reno County, another program I’m privileged to be a part of, launched.  Got back on Friday night and Meg was really sick.  Saturday, my oldest child had a band thing in Wichita.  Then, Sunday, YLRC had it’s graduation ceremony in the afternoon.

Left for church with all 4 kids on Sunday morning (Meg stayed home sick) and I had a flat tire.  We unloaded the car, got in the van.  I was privileged to have Kole Farney preaching for me and helping us wrap the series on The Church: God’s Plan with a sermon on A Prayer for Christian Unity.  Yesterday was lots of digging out from all of this and prepping for a big Elder/Deacon meeting in the evening.  So, finally to Tuesday.  Wanted you to know what’s been happening.  Hoping this week is more “normal” and that I’m able to keep making progress on the challenge of my own life.  Thanks for caring for me.

Weekend Recap – God’s Manifold Wisdom

February 6, 2017 by Phil Auxier

My 2/5/17AM sermon, God’s Manifold Wisdom from Ephesians 3:7-11, is now online.  This sermon continued our series on the church being God’s plan (not some extra that we can dial in to if we feel like it).  This was also a deep dive into Gospel realities that are ours.  So, I hope it encourages you and helps you progress in your faith.

Weekend Recap – God’s Mysterious Plan

January 30, 2017 by Phil Auxier

My 1/29/17AM sermon God’s Mysterious Plan out of Ephesians 3:1-6 is now online.  This is the 2nd in a few sermons on the subject of the church. This message was particularly meaningful because of where it ended up: the Gospel.  That’s right.  Church isn’t about any matter of secondary issues.  The church is what it is because of her Lord, who loved her and came after her to make her right with God.  Dive into God’s mysterious plan and fall into the wonder that is yours in Christ.

Crazy Week But God Is Gracious

January 28, 2017 by Phil Auxier

Ok…It’s been a wild ride this week and so the blog has been crazy…

On Sunday, my heart raced to 160 beats per minute for about 45 secs.  This concerned many around me, so I went to the ER to get things check out.  All the tests came back fine.  Blood work, EKG and other tests showed my heart looked good.  Met with my MD on Monday morning, and he wanted to pursue a stress test to keep ruling things out.  That happened Tuesday.  Finally heard on Thursday that everything was a-OK there.  So, that’s the physical side.

The Youth Leadership Reno County program I help facilitate traveled to Topeka on Wednesday to tour our state Capitol.  We got a picture with the governor, got to see the legislature in action, meet with our elected officials, and got back early evening.

Thursday, I went to Kansas City to get some studying in.  Enjoyed some great fellowship and encouragement with some friends of mine and did some sermon work for the upcoming season.

Friday and Saturday, I met with students and sponsors from Crestview to take in the Ready Conference at MBTS.  We heard some amazing speakers: Owen Strachan, Trip Lee, John Mark Yeats, and Jared Wilson, enjoyed some good fellowship, and were stirred to live a life that honors God.

So, it’s been a full week.  Many have prayed or reached out to me with expressions of love and care.  I’m grateful to have such amazing people loving and supporting me in life.  Hope you have a great weekend.

At Crestview, Lord willing, I’ll be preaching tomorrow, continuing our short series on the church.

Weekend Recap – Church: God’s Plan

January 23, 2017 by Phil Auxier

We launched a new series on the church yesterday.  My first sermon was The Church: God’s Plan from Ephesians 2:18-22.   My hope through this series is that we’d have our eyes on the Gospel and all the corporate implications that are hard-wired into its realities.  I hope this sermon encourages you.

From One Degree To Another?

Yeah, that's right. My one, consuming passion is Jesus Christ, my Lord. I'm totally gripped by one message: the Gospel - the good news that God came after me when I was far from Him. So, the life I live, I live by faith in Him: He loved me and gave Himself for me.

From One Degree To Another is the change that He's accomplishing in me by grace. Growing downward in humility, upward into Him, outward toward others, and inward with renewal characterize my existence.

This site is where I flesh all of these types of things out, including my life as a slave to Jesus, husband, father, coffee-enjoyer, and pastor. I hope it encourages you.
