Studying Theology as Servant

February 19, 2008 by Mere Agency Support

JT had an interesting post this morning for prospective seminary students. One article he recommends is by John Frame entitled Studying Theology as a Servant of Jesus. I would highly recommend this article to all those who are serious about applying God’s Word to their lives.

Frame is so helpful. I remember being influenced by reading Calvin’s Institutes in such a huge way. Calvin was writing a summa theologica or a summary of theology, holding forth the unique things he believed. He wrote the Institutes as a summa pietas or a sum of piety, emphasizing the import of what he believed upon life. Frame’s article had much the same feel.

– This article takes into account the presence of indwelling sin as it relates to the study of theology
– This article prepares you for the pitfalls you will encounter as the pride of knowing more than others creeps into your life in higher education
– This article holds forth a high view of Scripture upon theology

These are just some of the reasons I would highly commend reading this. Pastors, we need this reminder. Students of theology, this will help you in your studies. Good lay person in the church, be encouraged in your pursuit of God through this. Benefit from God by studying theology as a servant of Jesus.

MM – Valentine’s Recap and Thoughts…

February 18, 2008 by Mere Agency Support

For today’s marriage Monday segment, I thought I would publicly praise God and thank Him for my wife. We joined the throng of people who “celebrate their love” on Valetine’s Day last Thursday. In commenting to someone I was visiting with about this, my response was for someone who is a Christian husband, functioning like the Bible says, everyday is valentine’s day. We don’t need culture to dictate to us when we romance our wives, we are to be laying our lives down everyday out of love for them. Anyway, we did celebrate V-day. We arranged childcare for Andrew, then left to go to Wichita (about 45 minutes away). I suprised Meg by getting her some shoes she has been wanting. Then we ate at Jason’s Deli (which serves Dublin Dr. Pepper). We shopped at Border’s. Then went to the movies and watched National Treasure: Book of Secrets. All in all, was a good time and felt encouraged and communicated well.

My wife is pregnant with our next child, but I could not be more happier married to anyone. The Proverbs 31 woman receives praise from her husband at the gates, I want Meg to know my praise publicly. I am so thankful for her service to me, Andrew and our family. She works hard. I know she gets tired, especially in these days, but she perseveres through that and always seeks to be a blessing to me. So, here I am, praising God for the gift He has given me in a wife, specifically Meghan. I couldn’t be happier!

Lincoln in the News…

February 14, 2008 by Mere Agency Support

I increasingly enjoy reading Civil War history in my spare time, so I have especially enjoyed this week where the following articles appeared on the web:

Marvin Olsasky in World Magazine on how Lincoln looked to God as the prime actor in history

John Piper weighed in

and Justin Taylor pointed us to a new Lincoln book

Enjoy!

Oh, I just finished (2 days ago actually) James McPherson’s Hallowed Ground: A Walk at Gettysburg. It was a great read and really made me want to visit there someday.

Audio of Week — Desiring God 2008 Pastor’s Conference

February 13, 2008 by Mere Agency Support

For about a week now, I have been feasting on the audio available online (for free) from Desiring God from this year’s Pastor’s Conference. The Conference’s theme was The Pastor as Father and Son. I have listened to D.A. Carson’s moving messages entitled “The Pastor As Son of the Heavenly Father” and “The Pastor As Son of An Earthly Father.” I was really struck, though, by Crawford Loritts “Call To Courage.” Oh, and Piper’s biography of his father was excellent as well. Visit the audio page and check them out for yourself.

C.J. on Bell via Gilbert…

February 13, 2008 by Mere Agency Support

C.J. Mahaney has an excellent post regarding Rob Bell’s NOOMA phenomenon and some reviews he read from Greg Gilbert. As always, I appreciate C.J.’s humble, God-honoring tone in dealing with an issue of discernment such as this one.

Too Busy For Jesus…

February 11, 2008 by Mere Agency Support

I am in the midst of what feels like an extremely busy week. It seems like every time I knock something off of my to-do list, 2 or 3 things are popping up to replace it. It is hard to maintain discipline in times like this. It is great to remember, though, the calling placed upon my life. God has called me to myself. I heard a great line from Crawford Lorritt’s sermon at the 2008 Desiring God Pastor’s Conference this AM. How this all applies to busyness is that God may be using this busy season in my calling as a means to sanctify me. Often, we divorce our calling and sanctification. We compartmentalize our lives. God may be using the unique features of our life, calling and busyness, though, as a means to draw us into a more holy expression of grace.

Don’t be too busy for Jesus. Use your busyness as a means to grow in grace.

Marriage Monday – More on Intimacy

February 11, 2008 by Mere Agency Support

Last Friday at HomeWord, my message was entitled “A Biblical Theology of Sex In Marriage.” I have received a lot of helpful feedback. I handed out 2 articles. One was by C.J. Mahaney “Sex, Romance and the Glory of God: What Every Christian Husband Needs to Know” and the other was by C.J.’s wife, Carolyn “Sex, Romance, and the Glory of God: What Every Christian Wife Needs to Know.” If you are interested in these articles, they are available from Desiring God in the online book Sex and the Supremacy of Christ. Check it out and have your marriage encouraged.

Audio of Week – C.J. Interviews Dever (Part Deux)…

February 6, 2008 by Mere Agency Support

I was really challenged earlier this week as I listened to Part 2 of C.J. Mahaney interviewing Mark Dever. Dever speaks with such engagement on issues of church life. This interview helped crystallize some things in my mind on preaching, so that was very helpful. Either part of these interviews can stand alone. I would recommend both of them (although part 2 is what I heard this week). Enjoy.

Part 2: Building Healthy Church (2/1/2008)

Pray for Union University…

February 6, 2008 by Mere Agency Support

Last night, a tornado ripped through Jackson, TN and, specifically, Union University. My friend, Tim Ellsworth, helps lead communications on that campus. Freddy T also has ties there and he weighs in on this event. Here’s the latest update. When I lived in Tennessee before coming here, I was about an hour north of Jackson. We had lots of ties to this area. We should pray that God’s overaching glory permeates all these events as a testimony to His greatness and power.

From One Degree To Another?

Yeah, that's right. My one, consuming passion is Jesus Christ, my Lord. I'm totally gripped by one message: the Gospel - the good news that God came after me when I was far from Him. So, the life I live, I live by faith in Him: He loved me and gave Himself for me.

From One Degree To Another is the change that He's accomplishing in me by grace. Growing downward in humility, upward into Him, outward toward others, and inward with renewal characterize my existence.

This site is where I flesh all of these types of things out, including my life as a slave to Jesus, husband, father, coffee-enjoyer, and pastor. I hope it encourages you.
