We know the name Matthew Henry because his commentaries are probably one of the best-selling of all time. But he wrote an amazing resource on prayer which Lig Duncan (and others) recently updated in language and using the ESV. What the finished product looks like is an amazing aid in devotions by helping us to pray Scripturally. Enjoy.
A Pastor’s Prayer (On Sun AM)…
Father,
You have brought me out of darkness into Your light,
And called me to tell those in darkness of Your light.
You have sent me as salt into the earth,
And use my stewarding of Your Word
to call others as salt into the earth.
You found me when I was lost,
And have set me apart to find the lost,
And equip the saints to find the lost.
Give grace, I pray, to me in this hour,
To manifest Your Word in humbled pow’r.
In my words may You be praised,
Your people injured and then graciously raised.
I bow before You in desperate need,
For Your sweet mercies I insatiably plead.
Allow this to happen because of Your Son,
In His name I pray…may Your will be done.
Amen.
A Prayer Dare…
from Proverbs 30:7-9 (& Francis Chan)…
Only 3 Weeks?
…Yes. Only three weeks until I leave with students and adults from our church for Student Life Missions Camp. It looks like we will have a great week, with Neil McClendon as Camp Pastor and Billy & Cindy Foote leading our music. The theme is Flip! There’s also some great promotional videos available. We have been assigned an amazing missions opportunity. We get to work with a local community service organization that assists women. We will be painting and serving them.
Pray for this week as details come together. Pray for the staff at the camp. They have been doing this for weeks now and we want to refresh the spirits of all we encounter. Pray for our group to minister and reach out. Pray for God’s glory to be seen in all we do.
Wed PM Awana Awards…
Tonight, I get to speak to the children who have labored hard all year in memorizing Scripture for our church’s AWANA program. I’m going to give them an appeal from 2 Timothy 2:1-9 and encourage them, as Paul did Timothy to look to the Gospel.
There are 3 analogies used. Here’s the ESV Study Bible on them…
Verse 4 [The Soldier] calls for a single-minded desire to please God.
Verse 5 [The Athlete] reiterates that one must obey God’s rules in order to succeed.
Verse 6 [The Farmer] is the least clear but seems to encourage hard work by holding out the promise of blessing.
Pray that my words would encourage them and point others to the Gospel.
Inauguration Wrap Up…
I was immediately drawn, during the events yesterday, to pray for our President. It seems like such a weighty thing. Others have weighed in as well.
C.J. reflected on his thoughts. Al Mohler called us to pray, as did Lig.
I found the events of yesterday very moving and was encouraged with the day. I thought Warren’s prayer was appropriate and helped set a good tone. I thought Barack’s speech sought to include all Americans in some way. I was a bit bewildered by the benediction. What a great day to be American! What a great day to praise God for the blessings we enjoy in peaceful transitions in power! What a day to cry out to God for guidance and wisdom.
Somehow I missed this, but after watching it, thought I would pass it on. Very moving. (Thanks, Tony)
